Why is a Husker fan,
a Husker fan?
Pride - Tradition - Dedication
- and the passionate pursuit of excellence!
It lies in the hearts and souls of all Nebraskans
Check out the following short video and it may help explain it
HUSKER SPIRIT
Remembered by Ron "Bench Presley" Brew of the Husker Elvises
I was born and raised in Alliance, Nebraska. I grew up listening
to the
Husker games on the radio, and gathering around the television with my
family to cheer on our beloved Huskers. Having attended several
Nebraska home games and bowl games I am truly amazed and proud of the
Husker Nation and the Husker football team. Our teams do us proud
with
the grit, determination and heart they show on the playing field. And
our fans do us proud with their loyalty to the team as well as the
respect and
consideration they give to our opponents and their
fans. When I was
younger I wasn't always gracious to our opponent's fans, but as I grew
older and wiser I learned from older and wiser Nebraska fans that it is
far classier and much more meaningful to treat others with respect, and
it is just the right thing to do. I have tried to emulate that
respect
and consideration in my treatment of fans of our opponents.
As the old saying goes, I eat, sleep, drink, breathe, live and love
Nebraska football. I plan my days and vacations around game days,
so if
at all possible I am able to attend, watch, or at least listen to every
Husker football game. If I do have to miss a televised game
(rarely), I
am sure to tape the game so I can enjoy it when I get home from work.
Nebraska fans take their Husker football very seriously, and when others
attack our Huskers and our program, I get offended. I feel such a
part
of the team and the Husker Nation, that I take it personally if someone
insults us, just as I would if it were my own family, (which It is).
There were times when I was traveling and noticed someone wearing a
Nebraska shirt, coat or pin, and I immediately struck up a conversation
with them to discuss our beloved Huskers. Total strangers become
immediate friends when they learn we are both part of the Husker Nation.
Each time the Huskers lose a game, I lose a part of my self, my spirit,
and each time the Huskers win a game I gain a part of my self, my
spirit. Fortunately, over many, many years the wins have far
outweighed
the losses, so my spirit is able to soar happily and proudly as the
Huskers march on.
I love the Huskers, win or lose; you can't be a true fan and turn your
back on the team when the chips are down. Sure, you can get
frustrated
and even angry, and you may vent your frustration to your fellow Husker
fans, but you never give up your true loyalty to the team and the
program. That frustration and anger is there because you care so
deeply
and you want them to succeed so much, that you think, if only the
coaches would listen to me and my genius game plan they could have won
that game, but then on Monday you go back to your real job and reality
sets in.
Some of the greatest times in my life have been attending Nebraska
football games with my friends and family, and making many new friends
along the way. Nebraska has had its problems throughout the
years, but,
hey, what team hasn't. Many of those problems were found because
we
were under the media microscope due to the longevity of our
success. I
honestly believe that in the long run, over the years, comparatively
speaking, Nebraska has run the cleanest, finest, and most successful
program in the country, and here's to many, many, many more years of
continued fun, enjoyment, comradery and success with our Husker football
team and our Husker Nation, for you are truly my brothers and sisters as
we are all related through our Husker blood and spirit! GO BIG
RED!!!
Thank you, thank you vera much!!!!

100 REASONS WHY I'M A
CORNHUSKER FAN (the 2nd 10)
The HE website will present the 100 reasons in increments of 10 so you
can keep coming back to read them in bites size chunks.
Readers:
When I first got the idea for this piece, I thought
it might be a stretch to think of 100 reasons for being a Husker
fan. But the more I wrote, the more I realized how difficult
it was to limit the total to just 100. There are
many great moments in Husker football history that didn't make the cut,
not because they weren't important, but because of the constraints of
space.
Please email Husker Dan
with some of the reasons YOU are a Husker fan. What would you
include in your TOP 100? Send your comments to
huskerdan@cox.nethuskerdan@cox.nethuskerdan@cox.net HD will post the best responses in a
future Husker Dan
column. Be sure to list your name and town. Your name will
be used unless you specify otherwise.
11.)Mike Rozier (best NU running back,
ever)
12.)The Tunnel Walk on HuskerVision just
before the team comes on to the field
13.)Memorial Stadium on Game
Day
14.)Memorial Stadium on a Big Game Day
15.)A night game at Memorial Stadium (awesome!)
16.)The fact that there are only 1.6 million people in the
entire state and yet it has produced such great
players as Johnny Rodgers (Heisman), Eric Crouch (Heisman), Dave
Rimington (the only 2 time Outland Trophy winner), Bobby Reynolds, Tom
Novak, Jeff Kinney, Scott Frost , Ahman Green, Cory Schlesinger, Tom
Rathman, John Parella, the Kelsay brothers, Bob Churchich etc.
17.)The Cornhusker name. We're not
the 'Cats, Wildcats, Panthers, Cowboys, Lions, Tigers or Bears (oh,
my). We grow a buttload of corn in the state and we're proud to
be known as The Cornhuskers.
18.)Huskerpedia.com (hey, it never
hurts to suck up a little)
19.)When people in Nebraska ask you,
"How do you think they'll do this year", you know they don't mean corn futures, the stock
market or politicians.
20.)Rich Glover (maybe the best Nebraska
player ever)
Husker Spirit Remembered-
"I remember the time
when Coach Osborne won his first national championship. It had been a
long drought since the Devaney era and a national championship.
Tom had good and great teams but no national title. Many close
games before Tom won the big one. My father-in-law called me up
two minutes before the end of the game and I suddenly realized we were
finally going to win the BIG one. I was so emotionally wound up I
started to cry on the phone. It's truly more than just a game or just a
football team - it's a way of life. It's a sense of identity for us.
We're proud of our state and our roots. Since Husker football is really
the only show in the state - it's the unifying symbol of what we are as
a state - Nebraska football is the tie that binds us together, not just
as us brothers but as a 'state bond'. - Lesley Presley
